In the north, Cairo enjoys daytime highs around 20°C, while the south, including Luxor and Aswan, is warmer at around 25°C. Evenings can be cooler, dropping to around 10°C, so it’s worth packing a light jumper or jacket for after dark.

Best Places to Visit in Egypt in January

Cairo

January is one of the most comfortable times to explore Cairo’s ancient wonders. Visit the Great Pyramids of Giza, wander through the Egyptian Museum, marvel at the impressive new Grand Egyptian Museum and catch a glimpse of Tutankhamun’s iconic death mask. Soak up the vibrant atmosphere of Khan El Khalili Bazaar, where the scents, sounds and colours of Cairo come alive. The cooler temperatures make sightseeing far more enjoyable than during the scorching summer months.

If you have time, take a day trip to the ancient city of Saqqara to see the Step Pyramid, or explore Old Cairo’s historic mosques and churches.

💡 DID YOU KNOW? | There are at least 118 known pyramids in Egypt, though some estimates suggest there may be as many as 138 scattered across the country.

Luxor

Luxor is often called the world’s greatest open-air museum, and in January it’s at its most pleasant. The sun is warm but not overpowering, perfect for exploring the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple and the Temple of Hatshepsut.

The evenings can be cool, so a light jacket is useful for night walks along the Nile.

Luxor quickly became one of our favourite places in Egypt. From the intricate details inside the tombs of the Valley of the Kings to the sheer scale of Karnak Temple, the second-largest temple in the world, every site left us in awe. Luxor Temple is also incredibly beautiful and best visited early in the morning, just as it opens, to enjoy its magic before the crowds arrive.

💡 DID YOU KNOW? | Karnak temple was built over an incredible 2000 year period, and is the largest temple complex in Egypt.

Aswan

Further south, Aswan is warmer and beautifully peaceful in January. You can visit the Temple of Philae, sail on a traditional felucca boat, and take a day trip to Abu Simbel, one of Egypt’s most remarkable archaeological sites.

Abu Simbel is a magnificent double temple complex built by Pharaoh Ramesses II. In the 1960s, an extraordinary engineering project was carried out to relocate the temples to higher ground, saving them from being submerged by the rising waters caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

Aswan is a calm oasis compared to the business of Cairo. Spend time sitting by the river watching the sunset with a mint tea in hand watching the nile cruise boats steam past.

💡 DID YOU KNOW? | Relocating the temples required cutting them into over 1,000 blocks, moving them 200 meters inland and 65 meters higher!

The Red Sea – Hurghada & Sharm El Sheikh

The popular red sea resorts of Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh are both popular winter sun destinations with daytime highs around 23°C.

The water is clear and calm, making it one of the best months for snorkelling and diving. The coral reefs are spectacular, and you can easily spot colourful fish, turtles and rays.

In recent years, however, these resorts have become increasingly popular and often overcrowded, which has led to a decline in visitor satisfaction. The early morning scramble for sun loungers certainly isn’t our idea of relaxation. Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, the resorts saw a slump in Russian tourists which have increased again since flights to the region have resumed. There have been reports of rude or aggressive behaviour from some russian holidaymakers.

For a more peaceful stay, look for resorts around El Gouna or Dahab, both known for their relaxed atmosphere and great beaches.

At this time of year, we’d recommend avoiding these overcrowded resorts and instead focusing on Egypt’s incredible culture and history. The weather in January is perfect for sightseeing, making it an ideal time to explore the country’s ancient landmarks and vibrant cities.

💡 TOP TIP | Choose a resort with a private beach or jetty for easy access to the water, the best coral reefs are often right off the hotel’s shore.

Siwa Oasis

For something completely different, Siwa Oasis offers a unique experience far away from the crowds. Nestled deep in the Western Desert, it’s a tranquil spot surrounded by palm trees, salt lakes and natural hot springs.

The weather in January is ideal for exploring the dunes by 4x4 or bicycle, and the sunsets are breathtaking. The 10 hour overnight bus from Cairo might be daughnting for some, but this magical oasis is well worth it.

If this is your first visit to Egypt then we recommend sticking to the main tourist trails and exploring the majestic ancient sights, The Siwa Oasis is a long way in the opposite direction and is best perhaps explored if you have more time or are visiting Egypt for a second time.

💡 TOP TIP | Don’t miss watching the sunset from Fatnas Island, it’s one of the most magical views in Egypt.

Crowds, Prices and Travel Tips

January is part of Egypt’s high season for cultural travel, which means higher prices for flights and hotels. Popular attractions can get busy in the mornings, so it’s best to arrive early to enjoy a more relaxed experience.

If you’re flexible with your dates, it’s still possible to find good deals on flights and accommodation by booking as early as possible.

Pack for both warm days and cooler evenings, especially if you’re travelling between regions. In the south, daytime temperatures can be hot, but it gets noticeably cooler once the sun sets. Comfortable shoes are a must for exploring temples and archaeological sites.

Many visitors choose to hire a guide to make sightseeing easier and to avoid potential scams. While this isn’t essential if you’re confident travelling independently, using a guide on your first visit can save time and hassle at many of Egypt’s ancient attractions.
