Bedruthan Hotel and Spa is located in north Cornwall, between Newquay and the Bedruthan steps. Set on the cliff tops of Mawgan Porth beach, Bedruthan Hotel is perfectly positioned for guests to enjoy the breathtaking views of the coast and with easy access to go for a walk, take a swim or surf in the perfect waves.

What is Bedruthan Hotel and Spa like?

The hotel is spacious and filled with natural light, as a result of the large panoramic windows which direct your gaze out across the ocean waves. The Bedruthan Hotel and Spa is an iconic Cornish getaway, set over the cliff tops of Mawgan Porth as a lookout to enjoy watching the waves of the wild Atlantic Ocean.

The hotel has always been known as a creative space, both in design and as a place of inspiration, hosting creative workshops and displaying many pieces of art throughout the hotel.

Bedruthan Hotel and Spa has hosted many guests since the 1950s. Designed with simplicity and minimalism in mind, the hotel was originally inspired by Californian desert houses, that were defined by straight edges and had a very modern feel with big windows and outdoor terraces.

The hotel rooms have a Scandi-inspired style, with furniture imported from Denmark and the vision of the space was a unique escape that connected families and friends to spending time in nature and the beautiful Cornish coast.

How to get to Bedruthan Hotel and Spa?

By Car

From Bristol | 3 hours

From London | 5 hours

From Manchester | 6 hours

The most convenient way to get to Bedruthan Hotel is by car. Mawgan Porth is well-connected to main roads and is located just off the B3276, which allows you to explore the surrounding area and beautiful beaches.

The main route to the Bedruthan Hotel and Spa is to take the M5 southwest, following the A30 towards Bodmin and take the exit to B3274 to Roche/Victoria. Once you reach the B3276, the hotel is clearly signposted. There is a large car park outside the entrance of the hotel.

By Public transport

From Bristol | 4.5- 5 hours

From London | 6 hours

From Birmingham | 5 hours

The best direct route from London to Bedruthan Hotel is to get the train to Penzance from London Paddington and get off at St Austell station where the journey lasts approximately 4 hours 30 mins.

Once you arrive in St Austell, catch the bus to Newquay and get off at Brook House Inn, then hop on the Atlantic Coaster towards Mawgan Porth which runs from the end of May until early September check online for current service. The nearest bus stop to the hotel is Gwel-an-mor which takes around 15 minutes and is only a short 1minute walk from the bus stop.

How to get around Mawgan Porth?

The easiest way to Mawgan Porth beach is walking from the back of the hotel, passing the Scarlet Hotel on your left the South West Coast Path which takes you all the way down to the beach. From the beach, there is easy access to the main shops and cafés in Mawgan Porth.

When is the best time to visit Cornwall?

The best months to visit Cornwall for warm weather and fewer crowds are the months of June and September, outside of the school holidays is best to avoid long traffic queues.

Cornwall can be visited at any time of year, the spring and summer months bring warm long days in the sun whereas winter and autumn bring stormy waves with cosy evenings, snuggly wrapped up indoors.

In the autumn and winter months, there are much fewer crowds and it is the perfect time to watch the waves roll in from the comfort of your sea view room at Bedruthan Hotel and Spa.

The best months to visit for warm temperatures and a chance to catch some clean waves are May, June and September. Spend your days relaxing on the beach, exploring the beautiful coastline by walking along the South West Coast Path. For more experienced surfers, the best time to visit for the best waves is in February.

What are the rooms like at Bedruthan Hotel and Spa? 

Each room is designed in mind of its original roots, with a modern and minimalist style featuring large sliding doors allowing the fresh sea air into the space. We stayed in a sea-view double room which has a large king-size bed with a sustainable cork headboard, large windows overlooking the wild Atlantic and a bathroom that also looks out into the bedroom and has a sea view.

The bathroom had a bath and a separate rainfall shower with a blind for privacy. The bathroom is supplied with local and sustainable toiletries for you to use during your stay. The room also offers a coffee machine, TV, desk space and hairdryer. Room service is available and there is free Wi-Fi available throughout the hotel and in your room.

  • Apartment - the largest room in the hotel, sleeps two adults and a separate room for up to four children. Has a living room and private terrace or balcony

Dog Friendly

There is the option to bring your furry friend with you on your stay to Bedruthan Hotel, make sure to contact the hotel prior to arrival, as they have limited availability and only accept small and medium-sized dogs.

The Wild Café serves a fresh, seasonal and sustainable menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner with incredible views overlooking the cliffs at Mawgan Porth beach. Breakfast is served buffet style from 7 am till 11 am with fresh juices, pastries, fruit, yoghurts and lots more. Fresh pastries are available opposite the café throughout the day for you to purchase.

Ogo

The Ogo restaurant was recently rebranded in July 2023, ‘Ogo’ translates to cave in Cornish and serves high-quality, fresh and local ingredients. Formerly known as The Herring, the Ogo restaurant showcases sustainable local products such as freshly caught fish and vegetables grown just down the road.

The dining experience is further elevated by the presentation of the dishes in unique and creative ways to engage all of your senses and is accompanied by spectacular ocean views. Dinner is served from 5:30 pm till late and there is also the option to try the chefs take on an afternoon tea from 2 to 4 pm.

Ogo restaurant also serves lunch from 12 pm to 3 pm and offers the chance to bring your dog to dinner, however, you must pre-book. Children over the age of 5 are welcome to eat at the restaurant from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

Sensory Spa Garden

The outdoor Sensory Spa Garden is a peaceful and serene space to relax. The experience is made up of a series of rituals starting with a dry oat scrub made with pink Himalayan salt, rosemary, thyme and lavender which exfoliates the skin. The dry scrub is then rinsed off in the shower and followed by warming up in the cedar wood sauna with ocean views through the porthole.

Next, take the plunge under the cold water bucket for a shock to your senses, increasing blood circulation and releasing endorphins. Following the adrenaline rush, enjoy the outdoor hot tubs surrounded by greenery, as a relief from the cold water shock. Finally, lather on the wet seaweed scrub and rinse off in the shower. Wrap up in your robe and finish warming up by the fireside with your feet in a warm copper tub, whilst sipping a herbal tea.

Spa

There is a large indoor spa with a swimming pool, steam room, sauna, caldarium (roman bathroom) and hydro pool with a terrace that faces the ocean. The spa is open from 7:15 am to 9 pm and is for adults only, excluding the swimming pool.

There are also two outdoor pools opposite the sensory spa garden and spa treatments are available including hammam, body and facial treatments including pregnancy specific ones.

Classes, events and workshops

Craft sessions are held daily including felt making, clay, lino printing, drawing, tie-dye and more, all sessions require booking in advance. There is also a programme of well-being and yoga classes that are included complimentary without the need to book and are exclusive to hotel guests.

Wellness retreats in partnership with Oyogo are also available including trail running, cold water exposure, yoga, breathwork and surfing.

A Christmas Fayre is held at the hotel showcasing local craftspeople and artists from Cornwall with many beautiful and unique Christmas gifts. There are also workshops, carol singers, afternoon teas and Santa’s Grotto.

Bedurthan Hotel also offer Fire & Feast nights which is a wonderful experience serving delicious local Cornish food that is enjoyed by a cosy fire on the clifftop and finished with roasting marshmallows on the fire accompanied by other sweet treats - what more could you want?!

What Are the best things to do nearby?

Mawgan Porth beach

A dog-friendly beach with great facilities nearby including a café and surf school, this beautiful golden sandy beach is sheltered by towering cliffs with a lifeguard from May to October. There is a car park opposite the beach for easy access, however it is also accessible by foot from the back of Bedruthan Hotel.

Walk the South West Coastal Path

The South West Coast Path (SWCP) runs along the coast and follows along the edge of Mawgan Porth beach, take a walk in either direction, north or south to discover the picturesque Cornish coastline.

If you take the SWCP south, walk to Watergate Bay from Mawgan Porth, passing Beacon Cove and Bre-Pen where you will be treated to incredible views of Watergate Bay from above. If you take the SWCP north, walk to Bedruthan Steps an iconic geological feature of rocks that are surrounded by ocean at high tide.

Betty’s Surf Shop

A surf shop that was created back in 1959, at the same time as Bedruthan Hotel and Spa, this shop offers surf expertise on equipment hire and products. Hire all the gear you need for surfing to enjoy a day on Mawgan Porth beach. Browse their clothing and other beach products including sunglasses, swimwear and more.

Beach Box CAFE

A lovely spot for breakfast or a sweet treat, Beach Box café serves handmade gelato - perfect for those beach days, barista coffee, smoothies, smoothie bowls, waffles and freshly baked cakes. A must-visit when stopping Mawgan Porth, Beach Box café is a place proud to serve fresh local Cornish ingredients and satisfy your appetite with something spectacular.

KingSurf School

Located on Mawgan Porth beach, Kingsurf School offers surfing lessons for everyone from beginners to intermediate and family sessions in an optimum location for surfing. Teaching since 1997, Kingsurf School also offer surf camps and is only the surf camp licensed on Mawgan Porth where fewer crowds are guaranteed compared to other nearby popular surf spots.

Art at the Beach

Cornwall is a creative hub and home to many artists and craftspeople. Art at the Beach offer art lessons on Mawgan Porth Beach with Jeanni and other resident artists.

Watergate Bay

This long sweeping beach provides some of the best waves for beginners and the beach is tucked in between cliffs at either end. Watergate Bay is also home to a choice of great restaurants and one of our favourite hotels, Watergate Bay Hotel.

Newquay

Newquay is known as the surf capital of the UK, but perhaps you didn’t know it also has a great shopping and food scene. On our travels, we’ve found that in places where there’s a strong surf culture, there’s also a vibrant culinary scene and community that comes with it.

Bedruthan Steps

A short drive north of Bedruthan Hotel and Spa, Bedruthan Steps is a must whilst staying in the area. Park at the National Trust car park and walk to the viewpoint to see the rocks from above. Alternatively park at Bedruthan Steps Camping for £3.
