Bali in December offers a vibrant mix of festive fun, warm weather and lush scenery. It’s a great time to enjoy the island’s beaches, cultural sites and wellness experiences. Our very first visit to Bali was in December 2017 and we absolutely loved our time on the island. It was noticeably quieter than during the busy dry season.

Although it falls in the middle of the wet season, the rain is usually not as bad as many expect and it brings the waterfalls to life in spectacular fashion.

We also highly recommend extending your adventure to Lombok and the nearby Secret Gili Islands. Whether your plan is to escape winter or you’re looking for a unique way to end the year, Bali is a brilliant destination for a December getaway.

Bali Weather in December

December is part of Bali’s wet season, but that doesn’t mean non-stop rain. You’ll typically experience hot, humid days with temperatures ranging from 26°C to 31°C. Rain showers usually arrive in short, intense bursts in the afternoon or evening, leaving plenty of sunny spells earlier in the day. The island is beautifully green and waterfalls are at their fullest, making this a fantastic month for exploring Bali’s natural beauty.

Be prepared for thunder and lightning in the evenings after sunset. We actually found this to be a really romantic time on the island, with the sound of rain and the occasional clap of thunder filling the night air.

Another unique feature of Bali in December is the appearance of laron swarms, which are winged termites that emerge after the first big rains. They’re harmless and usually appear in the evenings, drawn to lights for a short time before disappearing.

💡 TOP TIP | If you’re riding a motorbike in the evening, make sure your helmet has a good visor. Laron swarms can appear suddenly after rain, and a visor will keep them out of your face while riding.

Locals see it as a sign that the rainy season has truly arrived. It can feel a little overwhelming at first, but closing doors and windows and keeping lights dimmed helps keep them out of indoor spaces. You may see local shop keepers sweeping piles of laron away from their doors in the evening time

Crowds and Prices

Early December sees moderate visitor numbers and good value on accommodation and activities. As Christmas approaches, demand increases and prices for flights and hotels rise sharply, especially between 20 December and New Year’s Eve. Christmas suddenly turns into one of the most exspensive times on the island and the busiest.

If you want to avoid the peak festive crowds, aim to travel in the first two weeks of the month. For those travelling over Christmas, make sure to book well in advance, particularly in popular areas like Seminyak, Ubud and Canggu.

Bali has many wonderful places to explore and relax. Canggu

Canggu has become one of Bali’s trendiest spots, attracting surfers, digital nomads and travellers looking for a laid-back vibe. The surf is consistent in December and there are plenty of cafés, bars and boutique stays to enjoy between sessions on the beach. Even with the rain, Canggu maintains its buzzy atmosphere, and festive season events give the area a fun energy.

Because of Canggu’s growing popularity, it can feel a little overwhelming at times. We suggest staying in Canggu if you enjoy a lively social scene and partying, but if you prefer a more peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, it’s best to base yourself elsewhere.

Uluwatu

Uluwatu sits on Bali’s southern tip and is famous for its dramatic cliffs, surf breaks and stunning ocean views. December brings slightly bigger swells, attracting experienced surfers to beaches like Padang Padang and Bingin. Non-surfers can enjoy the sunset bars perched on the cliffs, Balinese cultural performances at Uluwatu Temple, and luxurious cliffside resorts.

One of our favourite areas of Bali was Bingin Beach in Uluwatu. During our first visit, we stayed in a traditional Balinese beach house with the waves crashing beneath us. Recently, the Balinese government moved in and demolished all the guesthouses, leaving Bingin completely transformed. This once lively surf hotspot has been changed forever.

Amed

Amed is a quieter coastal region on Bali’s northeast, known for its excellent diving and snorkelling spots. December’s warm water temperatures make it perfect for underwater adventures, including exploring the famous USAT Liberty Shipwreck in nearby Tulamben and the famous underwater temple. It’s also a beautiful place to relax and enjoy scenic views of Mount Agung.

Amed feels like Bali back in 2017, offering a much quieter experience compared to the south. During the wet season, the water clarity isn’t always perfect for snorkelling, but getting in the water and exploring the coastline is still a real highlight.

Lombok

Lombok is a brilliant extension to a Bali trip, offering a quieter, more natural experience with pristine beaches, jungle-covered mountains and dramatic waterfalls. December sees warm weather and fewer crowds than Bali’s main tourist hubs. It’s a great time to relax on Senggigi Beach, explore Tiu Kelep waterfall or venture inland to discover authentic villages without the peak season rush.

Base yourself in the hip surf village of Kuta, and while you’re there, don’t forget to stop by Momma’s Pizza. They serve the best slices in town.

Gili Asahan

If you’re looking to completely switch off, head to the Secret Gili Islands just off Lombok’s southwest coast. Gili Asahan, Gili Gede and their neighbouring islets offer crystal-clear water, relaxed eco-resorts and excellent snorkelling. December mornings are usually calm, perfect for exploring the reefs or enjoying a peaceful day by the sea. This is the place to unwind and enjoy a slower pace before heading home.

These islands are a world away from the bustle of Bali and offer the perfect chance to relax on what can feel like a deserted tropical island.

Travelling by Ferry to Lombok

If you have extra time in your itinerary, consider extending your trip to Lombok. Fast ferries connect Bali to Lombok daily, usually departing from Padangbai or Sanur. The journey takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on conditions. December seas can occasionally be choppy, but most crossings run smoothly in the morning before the afternoon winds pick up.

We personally chose to go to Lombok via the slow local ferry. Crossings can take significantly longer at 4-5 hours. However, it is a fraction of the cost and the large ships can handle the sometime rough crossings. You are also able to take a vehicle on these ferries. It is perfect if you have a motorbike and want to explore at your own pace.

Lombok offers pristine beaches, incredible waterfalls and quieter landscapes compared to Bali. It’s a great way to see more of Indonesia and is the perfect add-on for those wanting to explore beyond Bali.

💡 TOP TIP | Consider Adding Lombok | Ferries run daily from Bali and it’s a great way to extend your trip to quieter beaches and stunning waterfalls.
