Tenerife is one of Europe’s most reliable winter sun escapes. While much of the continent wraps up for a cold and dark December, this Canary Island offers warm temperatures, dramatic volcanic scenery and a laid-back atmosphere that feels a world away from winter. Whether you want to relax on the beach, hike through national parks, or experience Christmas with a Spanish twist, Tenerife in December is a brilliant choice.
When we first visited Tenerife we weren’t sure what to expect, but the island completely won us over with its magnificent landscapes and stunning coastline. There’s so much more to Tenerife than the party resorts of the south, so take time to explore beyond the main tourist hubs.
How to Use This Guide
Use the contents table above to jump straight to the section you are most interested in. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about visiting Tenerife in December, including the weather, festive events, crowds, prices and where to stay.
Whether you are planning an early December getaway for some winter sun or looking to spend Christmas and New Year on the island, this guide will help you plan the perfect trip.
Tenerife Weather in December
Tenerife enjoys a subtropical climate, which means mild and pleasant weather throughout December. Average daytime temperatures hover around 22 °C, while nights are a comfortable 16 °C. The south of the island, particularly around Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas, is reliably sunny with only a few days of rain during the month.
The north, including Puerto de la Cruz, is slightly cooler and greener and more likely to experience some wet weather. Sea temperatures remain around 21 °C, so you can still swim and enjoy beach days.
Warm layers are useful in the evenings, especially if you plan to explore the higher elevations of Mount Teide where temperatures can drop significantly.
Crowds and Prices
December is a popular month for winter sun seekers, particularly from the UK and northern Europe. The first half of the month is quieter and often cheaper, making it ideal if you want a more relaxed vibe.
From mid-December onwards, tourism picks up quickly as families arrive for Christmas and New Year. Flights and accommodation prices rise during this period, so it’s wise to book well in advance if you’re travelling over the holidays. Even during peak festive weeks, Tenerife rarely feels overcrowded thanks to its size and range of different resort areas.
Our favourite part of the island is in the north. The dramatic cliffs, charming local villages and fewer tourists make it a great place to explore. However, be aware that the weather is less reliable in the north due to micro climates.
Best Places to Visit in December
Tenerife has two very distinct sides that offer different experiences in December:
South Tenerife Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos the most popular choice for guaranteed sunshine, beaches, luxury resorts and lively nightlife.
North Tenerife Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava cooler and greener with a more authentic Canarian atmosphere, ideal for travellers who want culture, charming towns and beautiful gardens.
Mount Teide National Park A must-visit year round, December is perfect for clear skies and hiking trails. The summit can have snow, creating a surreal contrast with the beaches below. If visiting the national park prepare for any weather and potentially very cold wind, rain and even snow.
Top Things to Do in Tenerife in December
Explore Mount Teide National Park
Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak, is spectacular in December. The air is crisp and clear, which makes for incredible visibility across the island and out to sea. Take the cable car to near the summit for breathtaking views or hike some of the trails through the volcanic landscape. Bring warm layers as temperatures can be close to freezing at the top.
The cable car can often be closed during windy weather so please check in advance.
Enjoy Beach Days in the South
The beaches around Costa Adeje, Playa del Duque and Playa de las Vistas are perfect for relaxing in December sunshine. Sun loungers are widely available and the water is warm enough to swim. Morning and early afternoon are best for the calmest conditions.
Whale and Dolphin Watching
December is one of the best months for spotting whales and dolphins between Tenerife and La Gomera. Boat tours operate daily from Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, offering the chance to see pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat.
Discover Charming Northern Towns
If you want to escape the resort areas, head north to La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with colourful colonial buildings and a relaxed atmosphere. Puerto de la Cruz is another great option with a beautiful seafront promenade, botanical gardens and authentic Canarian restaurants.
Hike in Anaga Rural Park
For dramatic green scenery, Anaga Rural Park in the island’s northeast is perfect in December’s mild weather. Trails wind through ancient laurel forests and along rugged coastal cliffs, offering some of the most beautiful views in Tenerife.
Festive Events and Activities
December brings a festive charm to Tenerife that blends Spanish traditions with the island’s unique character:
Christmas Markets | In towns like La Laguna and Santa Cruz you’ll find stalls selling crafts, decorations and local treats.
Nativity Scenes | Many towns create elaborate nativity scenes (Belénes), some of which are surprisingly intricate and worth visiting.
New Year’s Eve | Locals gather in squares for live music and fireworks. Many hotels and restaurants host special gala dinners to celebrate the new year in style.
Swimming on Christmas Day | A popular tradition for visitors is taking a dip in the sea on Christmas morning. With temperatures around 22 °C, it’s an easy way to make your festive season unforgettable.
