For decades, Ischgl has been the number one choice for skiing with Austrians and international visitors, promising great snow conditions and outstanding hospitality. This is what makes skiing in Austria one of the best places in the world because their ski resorts are truly world-class with modern lifts, perfectly groomed slopes, and a long ski season.

Ischgl has everything you would expect from a leading Austrian ski resort, but it is not just about skiing. As one of Europe’s top freeride destinations, the village also offers a wide range of accommodation options. Staying in a beautiful Austrian chalet or cosy alpine hotel allows you to enjoy an authentic Austrian hospitality experience, complete with charming interiors and Gemütlichkeit, the ultimate cosy feeling.

Whether you are looking for a luxury Ischgl hotel, a self-catering apartment, or an alpine chalet, there is something for everyone. From traditional alpine hotels to modern chalets and fully equipped apartments, Ischgl makes it easy to find the perfect base for a winter ski getaway.

This guide will help you navigate the different types of Ischgl accommodation, what to consider when booking, the best time to reserve your stay, and tips for making the most of your time in this iconic Austrian Alps ski resort.

Why Is Ischgl a Great Ski Resort?

Ischgl is one of Europe’s premier ski destinations, offering world-class slopes for all levels. Intermediate and advanced skiers will appreciate the extensive freeride terrain. With reliable snow and a modern lift system, you can spend more time skiing and less time waiting in line.

Beyond the slopes, Ischgl’s après-ski scene is legendary, with bars, restaurants, and exciting events through the season. Even on non-skiing days, there are plenty of activities to enjoy, from winter walking trails to relaxing in the scenic Silvretta spa.

Many hotels in Ischgl and the Paznaun Valley have been run by Austrian families for generations, with a warm hospitality that makes them feel like a home away from home. Austrians will go out of their way to make you feel welcome, which is unmatched in many other ski destinations.

Most places in the village are within walking distance of lifts, ski schools, and restaurants, while those in the Paznaun Valley offer stunning alpine views and easy access to nearby resorts. Compared to St Anton, Ischgl has a more varied range of high-end accommodation options, combined with a lively alpine village atmosphere, making it a standout destination in the Austrian Alps.

What should you know before booking accommodation in Ischgl?

Breakfast is typically included in the total cost of a hotel room or bed and breakfast stay. However, it is always worth checking the details. The most common booking options include Vollpension, which typically includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Halbpension refers to dinner being included, similar to half-board alternatives in the UK.

In Austria, each region charges a tourism tax, which is typically added to the accommodation fee and charged per adult per night. It’s best to check the tax rate with your hotel when booking. One thing you may notice is that most Austrians working in the hospitality industry speak excellent English, but it doesn't hurt to know a few German phrases!

To guarantee availability during busy periods (school holidays), book at least 5-6 months in advance. Many Austrians travel to the same destinations year after year, making it tough to book last minute. If you intend to go in a large group, it is essential to reserve in advance.

We enjoyed travelling by train, which is a simple and sustainable alternative to driving, with just a short bus ride from the station to Ischgl. Once you arrive, there is no need for a car, thanks to the resort’s reliable and free bus network. If you plan to travel by train or bus, it is worth checking how close your accommodation is to the nearest bus stop or train station.

How to find the best Accommodation Deals and Packages in Ischgl

If you're on a tighter budget, a good alternative is to look for accommodation outside of Ischgl in neighbouring villages such as Mathon and Galtür. These often offer better value and come with free bus transportation down the valley, making it an affordable and convenient option. Staying outside the village is also ideal for anyone looking for a quieter experience, away from the vibrant après-ski scene.

The most expensive hotels and chalets are found in the centre of Ischgl, which is the most convenient place to get on the slopes first thing in the morning. Many resorts offer package deals that include accommodation, ski passes and sometimes extras such as tickets to special events, such as the Top of the Mountain Concert.

Check the Ischgl website for upcoming events this winter, and exclusive package deals for ski passes, accommodation and events.

💡 TOP TIP | Keep in mind that when staying in Ischgl, a local tourist tax is added on top of the room price. This is standard across Austria, so it’s a good idea to include it in your budget.

Where is Ischgl?

Ischgl is found in the Paznaun Valley, which stretches along the Trisanna River from Galtür to Kappl and See towns. This valley serves as a conduit, allowing visitors to travel beyond Ischgl and remain outside the resort while yet having easy access to Ischgl.

Which is the best area to stay in Ischgl?

Ischgl Village

If you enjoy a lively après ski scene, the centre of Ischgl is the place to be. Known as one of the best party destinations in the Alps, the village is packed with shops, restaurants and bars. The beautiful Silvretta Therme Spa, with its outdoor pool bar, is perfect for relaxing after a day on the slopes.

Most of Ischgl's hotels are luxury 4 and 5-star properties, though there are fewer budget options in the heart of the village. Staying here gives you direct access to the Silvrettabahn and Pardatschgrat lifts, which take you up to Idalp, the resort's hub with restaurants and other facilities. Pardatschgrat offers a calmer blue run down from Idalp for a gentler skiing option.

Galtür

We stayed in Galtür, just a short bus ride from Ischgl.  A free bus takes around 15 minutes to the resort, though it’s worth checking the timetables if you do plan to join in on the après, as it can be earlier than you think! The last bus of the night can be an experience in itself. Otherwise, you can take a taxi back to Galtür, which can be expensive. Galtür has its own ski area, which is family-friendly and surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.

Other Nearby Villages

Beyond Ischgl, you can also consider staying in Kappl or See.

  • Kappl | Similar travel time to Galtür, with a family-friendly ski resort and slopes for various skill levels.

  • See | Around 20 minutes from Ischgl, offering hotels and B&Bs in a peaceful village setting.

Staying outside the centre of Ischgl is often more affordable, quieter, and still convenient, thanks to the reliable free bus service connecting the villages with the main resort.

What types of accommodation are there in Ischgl?

Ischgl offers a wide variety of accommodation from cosy self-catering chalets to more luxurious 5-star hotels. Staying at the centre of the village comes at a premium due to the convenience of being close to ski lifts, shops and restaurants.

Many of the premium hotels, such as Trofana Royal or Hotel Yscla, attract high-profile celebrities visiting the resort for the Top of the Mountain Concert. If you’re looking for a luxury ski holiday experience, then Ischgl offers high-quality service, with warm hospitality and convenience.

For a more personal experience, opt to stay in a family-run hotel or traditional chalet for a cosy atmosphere for an authentic Austrian winter getaway.

If you’re looking for more budget-friendly options, opt for an apartment for self-catering, where you can save money on eating out and ideal for bigger groups. Staying outside of Ischgl in Galtür and Kappl can offer better prices, connected by the free shuttle bus, making it a great option.

We stayed in Galtür during our ski trip in Ischgl at the Zontaja Hotel, a beautiful family-run hotel. It has a cosy alpine feel with a warm fireplace and scenic rooms. Most packages include a buffet breakfast, afternoon snack, and dinner during your stay, saving money on eating out.
