Lombok is one of Indonesia’s most incredible islands, known for its quiet beaches, lush waterfalls, dramatic volcano views, and a calmer, slower atmosphere compared to its neighbour, Bali. Whether you want to surf, snorkel, chase sunsets, or simply relax on palm-lined shores, choosing the right area can make all the difference to your time on Lombok.

The island feels like the perfect destination after spending time in Bali. Its quieter, slower pace is a stark contrast to Bali, which in recent years has started to feel a little overwhelming in some areas. Lombok often feels like what Bali used to be, offering serenity and natural beauty, and it remains one of our favourite islands in Indonesia.

This guide breaks down the best places to stay in Lombok, from the popular beaches of Kuta to the world-famous Gili Islands and the remote Secret Gilis in the southwest.

Kuta Lombok

Kuta is the most popular place to stay in Lombok and the island’s main tourism hub. With jungle-backed hills, boutique cafés, beach bars and easy access to many of the island’s best beaches, it is a perfect base for first-time visitors. From here you can explore Selong Belanak Beach, Tanjung Aan, Mawun Beach, Mawi Beach and the viewpoints that overlook Kuta’s sweeping coastline.

Kuta has a young, adventurous feel with surf schools, scooter rental shops, relaxed nightlife and a growing range of hotels. It is also one of the best locations for day trips around Lombok’s south coast.

When staying in Kuta, don’t forget to visit our favourite pizza place in town Mama Pizza!

Senggigi

Senggigi was once Lombok’s main tourist centre and still offers a peaceful coastal atmosphere with sweeping bays, calm waters and beautiful sunset views over Bali’s Mount Agung far in the distance across the Lombok strait. It is quieter than Kuta and feels more traditional, with local markets, beachside restaurants and resorts tucked among palm trees.

This area is ideal for travellers who want scenic beaches without the busier feel of the south. It is also convenient if you plan to visit the Gili Islands, which are easily reachable by speedboat from nearby Bangsal Harbour.

If you want a variety of beaches, then Kuta is definitely the better choice as there are more beach options in the south. Senggigi beach is beautiful though and offers the best sunset views.

Gili Trawangan is the most popular, known for beach bars, nightlife, diving and viewpoints overlooking the ocean.
Gili Air has a relaxed, social feel with great snorkelling and beach restaurants.
Gili Meno is the quietest, ideal for couples and travellers who want serenity and laid-back beach time.

From any of the Gilis you can snorkel with turtles, cycle around the island and enjoy some of the best beaches in the region.

This area is ideal if you want to slow down, explore nature and experience local life. It is also a good stop if you are travelling across the island rather than staying on the coast the entire time.
