10 British beaches in the UK you should visit

You may be surprised to find out that the British coastline is home to some of the best beaches in the world. We set out this year to explore the coasts of England, Scotland and Wales to find out which ones are the best.

Pedn Vounder

Ever since we climbed down to the rocks just above Pedn Vounder we have been in love! The incredible colour of the water and golden sand backed by rocky cliffs. It is an adventure getting down and only accessible when the tide rolls out. You will be amazed at just how far the tide does roll out and by mid afternoon a sort of sand island is revealed. Read more about Pedn Vounder here, it is a beach you need to add to your list and on a warm sunny day you could think you are somewhere exotic.

Barafundle

The first thing people notice as they gaze across the golden sand is how the trees grow right down to the edge of the beach. Barafundle is a quite safe beach with calm waters. When you see it you will see why it has been voted as one of the best beaches in the world.

Porthcurno

Located just around the corner from Pedn Vounder, Porthcurno is far easier to get to and is more busy because of this. Despite being a popular beach the views from the cliffs above will take your breath away. As with Pedn Vounder this is a soft golden sand beach with turquoise water that will have you scratching your head as to which country you are in. This could be the perfect beach for families as the water is generally very safe on a summers day.

Luskentyre

Luskentyre has to be seen to be believed. Located on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides it is a magical location. Luskentyre is a large white sand beach surrounded by mountain views. If the Isle of Lewis was located in the tropics then this beach would be packed everyday. Voted as one of the beast beaches in the world and with views of the remote island of Taransay, Luskentyre is an incredible place to visit.

Achmelvich

Currently our favourite beach on the Scottish mainland and one that most travel guides will mention. It is easy to see why! Achmelvich is actually made up of two beaches and we think the second beach is the most beautiful. Like many Scottish beaches the sand is white and the water is perfectly clear. When the sun is out the water reflects back an incredible colour that has to be seen to be believed.

Durdle Door

The famous arch that sits at one end of the beach draws large crowds, Durdle Door has a lot of space and sand to sunbath in as you move away from the arch and is a great beach to explore on a summers day. The cliffs above are also perfect for coastal walkers and a picnic.

Uig Beach

This large vast expanse of sand in the Outer Hebrides may not be the ideal sunbathing location, but it is a great place to get that fresh ocean air. The parking facilities are also very good and if travelling by camper van there are also waste and water facilities.

Porth Lago

This small remote beach on the Welsh coast is an absolute gem of a beach. The sunsets here are some of the best we have seen in Britain. You can either walk along the coast to Porth Lago or you can drive down some very very tight country lanes and through the privately owned farm. You will then be able to pay for either the day or camp on the cliffs above. The facilities are minimal but the views are worth every moment spent here.

Northton

Another gem from the Isle of Lewis, there is a string of beaches in Northton and walking past the first one and across a field leads you to our favourite. A white sand beach with mountain views. Both times we visited this beach we were the only ones there, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate from the hills above as the sunsets here on a clear day are beautiful.

Worbarrow Bay

This is a military beach on the South Coast of England and it is usually closed to the public for most of the year. You can check in advance when it is open. This means that generally it is quiet and peaceful. Although the beach itself is mainly made of pebbles if you walk to the end where the recent landslide happened then there is a beautiful soft sandy section.
