Tucked along Sri Lanka’s southern coastline, Hiriketiya has grown from a quiet hidden bay into one of the country’s most desirable beach destinations. Known for its turquoise water, relaxed surf culture, jungle surroundings, and growing café scene, it offers a rare mix of peacefullness and enough going on in one compact area.
Hiriketiya quickly became one of our favourite places in Sri Lanka, we loved the laid back relaxed atmosphere, incredible food scene and jaw droppingly beautiful coastal landscape. Within walking distance we found beautiful beach after beautiful beach and within a short tuk tuk ride we could be swimming with sea turtles.
Besides its stunning natural beauty, one of the best things about Hiriketiya is the absence of a busy main road running through the village. Unlike Ahangama, where the main coastal road cuts right through the centre and traffic is constant throughout the day, Hiriketiya feels much more peaceful.
The village is far more pedestrian-friendly, with quiet lanes leading between the beach, cafés, and accommodation, creating a laid-back, barefoot island atmosphere. It was one of the main reasons we ended up staying longer than planned, and we think this slower pace also makes Hiriketiya a fantastic choice for families travelling with young children.

If it's your first time visiting Hiriketiya, staying close to the beachfront is hard to beat. The resort features a large infinity pool, on-site restaurant and bar, and modern rooms designed with a focus on comfort and space. Guests can enjoy a quieter environment away from the beachfront crowds while still being only a short drive or walk from Hiriketiya’s surf, cafés, and yoga scene.
This is one of the newest additions to the area’s accommodation scene and brings a more resort-style luxury option to a destination that is otherwise dominated by boutique hotels and villas.
Just around the corner from Hiriketiya is Dickwella, a larger and more local coastal town that offers a very different experience to the boutique feel of the bay. While Hiriketiya is compact and design-led, Dickwella stretches along a wide coastline with long sandy beaches, fewer tourists, and a much more relaxed everyday rhythm.
This is where you come for space, value, and a more authentic slice of southern Sri Lanka. Accommodation is generally cheaper, beaches are quieter, and life moves at a slower pace.
