ZELENCI NATURE RESERVE
Emerald green lake and mountain views, what more could you ask for?
A bit of a hidden gem in the Triglav National park of Slovenia. Overlooked by beautiful mountains from the Julian Alps, this little nature reserve is a beautiful peaceful spot that we highly recommend visiting.
We arrived in Kranjska Gora after travelling over Slovenia's highest mountain pass Vršič Pass, you can read about Vršič Pass here. Zelenci Nature Reserve is a short 5-10 drive from Kranjska Gora and is easily found on Google maps.
The nature reserve itself is not visible from the road but a parking area is. You will walk through the trees for a few minutes before being greeted by a beautiful emerald green lake. It is only small but its jaw dropping beauty more than makes up for that!
We visited both at midday and then returned for sunset. On both visits we encountered no more than 2 other people. We were worried that it would become very busy at sunset but happily surprised that it didn't. We were also visiting in Autumn when Slovenia is generally quieter than the summer anyway. The watch tower makes a perfect platform for a photo across the lake and views of the mountains. It is also a great place to spot wildlife.
You can spend as long as you like in the nature reserve but it is also great for a shorter visit before heading off and seeing other sights in the area.
