A Guide to Exploring Lake Bled

LAKE BLED

Slovenia's most famous lake, the one with the beautiful church on its own island in the middle. If you are visiting Slovenia, then you must visit Lake Bled.

WHERE TO STAY

We stayed at the Rikli Balance Hotel. It has recently undergone a renovation and now feels very clean and contemporary. The large spa and swimming area including water slides is a fun way to spend some time when not exploring the lake. With views over the lake it is a comfortable and convenient hotel to stay in. At 126 Euros a night it is not the cheapest nor the most expensive option

There are more budget options such as Airbnbs and guesthouses if you are willing to stay a little outside of Bled. There are also more premium options if you are wanting to splash the cash for maximum comfort and style.

WHEN TO VISIT

Bled can be unbearably busy during the peak summer months. For us we would much rather avoid the crowds and stay during the shoulder seasons. We loved Bled in Autumn when the colours were all golden.

WHAT TO DO IN BLED

WALK

Take a walk around the lake, it is a beautiful 6km walk right around the lake, The views from each side of the lake are different and uniquely beautiful.  We loved the less busy northern side and the calmness away from the southern side where the majority of the hotels and restaurants are.

ROW A BOAT

Hire a row boat and enjoy paddling yourself to Bled Island, more on the far side and then enjoy exploring the small island before cruising around the lake under your own power. Alternatively you can hire paddle boards or book a seat on one of the large boats and be taken to the island.

BLED CASTLE

Enjoy the incredible views from Bled castle, supposedly the oldest castle in Slovenia and one of the most visited sites. Take on the 850 steps to the top and be rewarded with the best views out across Lake Bled.

TAKE A SWIM

There are several marked off swimming spots around the lake for a refreshing safe swim in the clear waters of Lake Bled. Reportedly the water has healing properties because of the minerals in the water.

TOBOGGAN RUN

A 500 meter track down the side of a hill overlooking Lake Bled. A rush of adrenaline and an alpine favourite. Have you really ever been to the alps if you've never been on a toboggan run?

WHAT ELSE TO DO IN THE AREA

LAKE BOHINJ

Lake Bohinj is far less built up and with clear turquoise waters and mountain views it is rightly considered Slovenia's most beautiful lake. Get up early for a swim when the morning mist still lingers over the lake.

VINTGAR GORGE

Slovenia's most spectacular gorge, a handy walkway system is built into the gorge to assist with exploring the site. We would consider this one of the most beautiful gorges we have ever visited. The entry price of 4 Euros per adult is a bargain. Make sure you visit the bear's head during the trail.
