Close to the Austrian border, South Tyrol (Südtirol/Alto Adige) is north of Lake Garda and Milan and northwest of Venice. What to know before visiting Lana?

In South Tyrol most of the locals speak more than one language and are bilingual, more than half speak German, a quarter speak Italian and some still speak Ladin, a local dialect. Most places in the region have more than one name, for example Meran and Merano.

South Tyrol was historically part of Austria, before it was annexed by Italy in WW1. After this change, many places were given Italian or latin derived names and most are now referred to by either name. Lana was one of the few places, only three in total within South Tyrol where their names were not changed.

What is Lana known for?

The valley floor in Lana is covered in apple orchards producing some of the best apples in Italy and is the main producer in South Tyrol, growing them for hundreds of years. South Tyrol is the largest organic apple supplier in Europe. Lana is perfectly positioned where the combination of the Mediterranean and alpine climates meet and creates the ideal conditions for apples to grow sheltered by mountains in the north.

Alongside growing apples, conditions in the valley are also perfect for grape varieties grown for wine. The valley produces high-quality wines and there is a vibrant viticulture and food scene that is worth discovering upon your visit. Lana has a sophisticated high street, adorned with bakeries, cafés and boutique shops. In days gone by, pilgrims would follow the scenic routes to the many historical religious sites found within the valley.
